Women’s World Cup: Amelia Kerr all-round show helps New Zealand in thrashing India by 62 runs
Women’s World Cup: Harmanpreet Kaur‘s valiant 71-run effort was in vain as New Zealand cruised to a 62-run victory over India in the current ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2022 at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Thursday.
Amelia Kerr‘s all-round effort for the White Ferns stood out, as she made a magnificent half-century and then followed it up by scalping three wickets to decimate the Women’s in Blue batting order. India was held in check by New Zealand, who were defending a target of 261. The Indian openers, Yastika Bhatia and Smriti Mandhana, got off to a poor start, with runs hard to come by.
Jess Ker was able to dismiss Mandhana for 6 runs, with the opener chipping it straight to cover. Deepti Sharma didn’t last long either, with Lea Tahuhu trapping her LBW for 5 in a successful review as India slumped to 26/2.
Bhatia and Mithali Raj were unable to increase the tempo as the hosts maintained their disciplined line and length. As Tahuhu celebrated her second scalp, Bhatia would finally perish for 28 with a leading edge to cover. Harmanpreet Kaur will join Raj, and the two senior Indian batters would face a difficult task.
India were 75/3 in their chase of 261, having a mountain to climb after 25 overs. In the 30th over, Amelia Kerr added to the Indians’ woes by removing Mithali Raj and Richa Ghosh on consecutive deliveries.
It was all downhill from there for India, as wickets fell at regular intervals and the Women in Blue were eventually dismissed for 198.
Pooja Vastrakar took four wickets earlier to help India restrict New Zealand to 260/9.
Amy Satterthwaite and Amelia Kerr both bowled 75 and 50 runs, respectively. Pooja Vastrakar took four wickets for Women in Blue. And involved in a key run out, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad dismissed two players.
New Zealand 260/9 (Amy Satterthwaite 75, Amelia Kerr 50; Pooja Vastrakar 4/34) vs India (Harmanpreet Kaur 71, Mithali Raj 31; Amelia Kerr 3-56).
