Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: Australia cricketers donate prize money to Sri Lanka kids
Australia’s cricket stars have contributed prize money from their recent tour of crisis-stricken Sri Lanka to benefit the children there, officials said on Thursday.
After the men’s team experienced lengthy fuel lines and political protests during the mid-year tour, Cricket Australia announced that US$30,000 will be provided as a show of solidarity.
Millions of Sri Lankans are struggling to make ends meet due to high inflation and frequent fuel shortages.
Widespread protests forced the country’s president and prime minister to resign, and the United Nations has declared a humanitarian catastrophe.
The crisis witnessed firsthand by the Australian visitors.
“It was very clear to us how much day-to-day life for Sri Lankans impacted,” captain Pat Cummins said.
The funds will go to UNICEF, the organisation that provides relief to children worldwide.
