SA vs BAN: Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal lauded Shakib Al Hasan for displaying “big heart” by staying in South Africa and playing the third ODI despite numerous members of his family being hospitalised at home.

Last Wednesday, Bangladesh made history by defeating South Africa in a bilateral series for the first time in their own soil, by nine wickets in the third ODI of the three-match ODI series in Centurion. Bangladesh has won their first bilateral ODI series in South Africa with a 2-1 triumph.

“It takes a very big heart to endure what Shakib is going through. Not many people could have done it. There would be nothing wrong to want to be with one’s family in such a situation. For me his performance wasn’t important. But the dedication that he showed, it was the most important thing. I am telling you. Four or five members of his family are in the hospital. He is still playing and smiling with the team. It takes a big heart,” ESPNcricinfo quotes Tamim Iqbal as saying.

Bangladesh defeated South Africa thanks to Taskin Ahmed‘s five-wicket haul and Tamim Iqbal’s unbeaten 87-run knock.

Shakib was instrumental in helping his team win the series with both bat and ball. In three games, he scored 85 runs, including a 77 in the first, and took three wickets. Bangladesh triumphed with 141 balls to spare after he hit the winning runs.

The first Test match between South Africa and Bangladesh will take place in Durban on Thursday. The second Test will begin on April 8 in Port Elizabeth.
