KSCA Maharaja Trophy: While Will Smeed, 20, recently became the first player to score a century in England’s most popular T20 tournament, “The Hundred,” at Edgbaston, Rohan Patil, 20, of Karnataka, became the first player to do so in the inaugural Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20, which is being played at the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadiyar Ground in Mysore.

His brilliant innings on Thursday enabled his team, the Gulbarga Mystics, to defeat the Mysore Warriors, an Indian cricket team captained by Karun Nair, who built up a score of 160/4 in 19 overs, by a whopping 9 wickets. Rohan, who batted first for the Gulbarga Mystics, was cool and collected throughout his innings, taking just 15 deliveries to complete his half-century and just 42 to get his century. His undefeated innings of 112 runs had seven boundary runs and 11 fours.

“I really enjoyed my innings yesterday and after a point. It felt like the crowd started cheering for us instead of the home team. It definitely feels great to be the first to get a century at the Maharaja Trophy, this is a great opportunity for youngsters like me,” stated the youngster who plays for Sir Syed Cricketers, a first division club based out of Bengaluru.

Rohan’s involvement in the sport began because his father, Anand Patil, was a KSCA-empanelled umpire.

“Yes, of course, I started playing cricket because of my father who involved in the sport as an umpire. But I think I always drawn to the game as a kid. And having closely watched a lot of players don the India colours from Karnataka. I inspired to take up the sport in all seriousness,” added Patil.

He feels it is too soon to begin fantasizing about playing in the IPL. Even if he hopes to attract franchisees in the massive IPL with remarkable performances in the Maharaja Trophy.

“I am aware that a good show here could help me draw the attention of IPL franchises. And surely if given a chance, I will aim to play my best. But for now, I only focused on playing good innings for my team Gulbarga Mystics. And help the team play in the final of Maharaja Trophy,” Rohan asserted.

Mysore Warriors captain Karun Nair had played a daring 91-run innings on Wednesday, only one day earlier. But he fell short of the century mark as his team successfully pursued the Hubli Tigers’ 141-run goal.

The Bengaluru leg of the tournament begins next week at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. And there have already been some significant scores in the competition. Rohan’s century may only be the beginning of even more significant innings.
