Jonny Bairstow ruled out of T20 World Cup 2022 due to freak accident

England have confirmed that Jonny Bairstow has been ruled out of the third Test against South Africa as well as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

In a freak accident, Bairstow injured his lower limb. On Friday in Leeds, he was playing golf when he got hurt. He is currently out of the T20 WC in Australia as well as the remainder of the summer due to injury.

With Jason Roy’s exclusion, Bairstow was selected for the England T20 World Cup squad. And was scheduled to open the innings with Jos Buttler.

A statement confirming Bairstow’s injury by the ECB read:

“Bairstow sustained a lower limb injury in a freak accident whilst playing golf on Friday in Leeds. He will see a specialist next week to ascertain the full extent of the injury.

“Nottinghamshire batter Ben Duckett added to the Test squad for the third Test at the Kia Oval starting next Thursday. A further announcement will be made in due course on who will replace Bairstow in England’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad.”

The third Test between England and South Africa will take place next, beginning on September 8 at the Oval. After England recovered in the second Test in Manchester, the series now tied at 1-1. Important World Test Championship points will also be on the line in addition to the series win.

With Ben Duckett replacing him in the Test squad, it now remains to be seen who will replace him in the squad of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
