Jonny Bairstow: England batter confirms surgery complete on ‘freak’ lower limb injury

England batter Jonny Bairstow confirmed on Wednesday that his leg surgery has been completed successfully and is heading back home for rest.

Bairstow ruled out from the remainder of the summer season and the World Cup just hours after the announcement of England’s ICC T20 World Cup 2022 squad. While playing golf in Leeds, Bairstow was involved in an accident that resulted in a lower limb injury. In addition to thanking his followers for their well wishes and support, Bairstow posted on Instagram to report the successful outcome of his procedure.

“Operation day completed and back home now to rest! Thanks for all your messages of support and wishes!” said a post from Bairstow.

Until his injury, Bairstow was playing English cricket’s extremely productive summer season in the best shape of his life.

It was known as the “Summer of Jonny” in Test cricket. He scored 681 runs at an average of 75.66 in six Test matches. With a best individual score of 162, he achieved four centuries and a half-century. His team won the home series against New Zealand by a score of 3-0 and drew the series against England by a score of 2-2 thanks to his four centuries in three back-to-back Tests against New Zealand (two Tests) and India (one Test).

He also holds the record for most Test runs scored globally till the end of 2022 with 1,061 runs in 10 games and 19 innings, averaging 66.31 runs per game. This aggressive batter has scored six hundreds and one half-century.

After the recent end of England’s home series against South Africa, he also voted the “Test Cricketer of the Summer.”

His ODI statistics for this season, however, fell short of expectations as he managed only 136 runs at an average of 27.20 in five games. His sole ODI half-century this year was 63, which was also his highest score in the format.

In the three T20Is he played this year, Bairstow put up some respectable stats. In three games, he scored 147 runs at an average of 49. His season-best score in the format is 90. Also he has produced a half-century with the bat.

In the meantime, Alex Hales, who hasn’t played for England since 2019. He called up to the team to replace Bairstow for the T20 WC.

ICC T20 World Cup will start from October 16 and will end on November 13.

England performed admirably in the tournament’s 2021 iteration. They advanced to the semifinals but lost to New Zealand.
