IND vs ZIM: Indian all-rounder Axar Patel praised the bowlers, especially Avesh Khan and Shardul Thakur, after his team’s 13-run victory over Zimbabwe in the third and final ODI.

KL Rahul-led India outplayed Zimbabwe in all three areas of the game to win by 13 runs at the Harare Sports Club on Monday and secure a 3-0 triumph in the three-match ODI series.

“We had set a nice total after batting first and Zimbabwe also scored at a nice run rate. We thought we had the match after two-three wickets fell in the middle but the way Sikander Raza batted in the final ten overs, we thought he could take away the game from us. But we backed our plans. Bowlers executed their balls well, like Avesh Khan delivering his yorkers and Shardul Thakur delivering his slower balls and wide yorkers,” said Axar in a post-match press conference.

The all-around player claims that he makes the most of the few opportunities he has to represent his country.

“I train myself to make the best out of my opportunities,” he added.

Axar noted that the mood and support from the crowd in Harare gave him the impression that he was performing in his own Gujarat.

“When I was in the US playing against West Indies, there were 80-90 per cent Gujaratis in the crowd. Here as well, they were cheering for me wearing Gujarat Titans shirts. It felt good,” he added.

Regarding the decision to bat first in the final ODI, Axar claimed that some players required a mid-game break before the Asia Cup 2022.

He praised Brad Evans for his outstanding bowling performance.

He bowled good line and length, varied his pace well in death overs,” he added.

With this victory, India captured the three-match series 3-0.

India had previously batted first and had amassed 289/8 in 50 overs. KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan’s opening 63-run partnership lay the groundwork for the Men in Blue’s successful total. India stood at 2/84 following Dhawan’s exit. Ishan Kishan and Gill then launched their assault on the bowlers and put together a 140-run stand.

Zimbabwe staged a modest comeback when their partnership was broken, collecting the next five wickets in a span of just 65 runs. With a brilliant 5/54, Brad Evans finished as Zimbabwe’s top bowler.

Zimbabwe was at 169/7 while pursuing 290. Despite playing a fantastic 45-run knock, every other batsman had trouble. Then, however, all-rounder Sikander Raza nearly led Zimbabwe to victory. With his outstanding 115 runs off just 95 balls and 104-run stand with Brad Evans. To bundle out the hosts for 276 though, Avesh Khan (3/66) and Shardul Thakur (1/55) struck just in time.

Axar Patel (2/30), Deepak Chahar (2/75), and Kuldeep Yadav (2/38) all made valuable contributions with the ball for India.

Gill’s outstanding 130 earned him the title of “Man of the Match.”
