IND vs WI: Suryakumar Yadav’s 65-run knock was backed up by a spirited bowling performance as India defeated West Indies by 17 runs in the third and final T20I at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.

With this win, India won the three-match T20I series 3-0. The Men in Blue had previously trounced the West Indies 3-0 in an ODI series. West Indies, chasing 185, got off to the worst possible start, losing opening hitter Kyle Mayers (6) on Deepak Chahar’s fifth ball of the innings. Chahar dismissed Shai Hope (8) in his following over, reducing West Indies to 26/2 in the third over. After Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell teamed up at the crease, the visitors’ score was 68/2 after powerplay overs.

Harshal Patel got the better of Powell in the seventh over and broke the 47-run third-wicket stand (25). Venkatesh Iyer then got among the wickets, taking the valuable scalp of skipper Kieron Pollard (5), reducing the Windies to 82/4, with 103 runs still needed to win.

Pooran (61) and Romario Shephard (29) gave it their all. But the job was too much for them, and India won by 17 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav (65) and Venkatesh Iyer (35*) led India’s batsmen to a total of 184/5 in the allocated twenty overs. India did not get off to a good start when they were sent to bat, losing opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad (4) in the third over to Jason Holder’s bowling. In the middle, Shreyas Iyer joined Ishan Kishan, and India’s score was 43/1 at the end of the powerplay overs.

Shreyas and Ishan’s 53-run second-wicket stand came to an end in the ninth over. When Hayden Walsh Jr sent Shreyas (25) back to the pavilion, bringing skipper Rohit Sharma to the crease. In the next over, Roston Chase bowled Kishan (34) and India reduced to 66/3 in the 10th over.

Dominic Drakes bowled Rohit (7) in the 14th over, breaking the partnership of Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav, who put up 27 runs for the fourth wicket. Suryakumar and Venkatesh Iyer then joined Suryakumar in the middle, giving the innings some momentum. However, the hosts added 86 more runs to their tally in the final five overs, pushing the total above 180 runs. For the fifth wicket, Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav put on a 91-run stand.
