IND vs SL: Grateful to what game has given me so far, says Ashwin after going past Kapil Dev
IND vs SL: India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said on Sunday that he is grateful for everything the game of cricket has provided him so far.
India thrashed Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series, prompting Ashwin’s remarks. During the process, Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev as India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker.
“28 years ago, I was cheering the great @therealkapildev on to get his world record tally of wickets. I never had the slightest of ideas that I would become an off spinner, play for my country and even manage to go past the great mans tally of wickets. I am delighted and very grateful to what this game has given me so far,” Ashwin wrote on Instagram.
Ashwin took out Charith Asalanka for the 435th time in Test cricket. On the third day, Ashwin matched Kapil Dev’s total. With 619 Test wickets, Anil Kumble is India’s all-time leading wicket-taker.
In the first Test, India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs, with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin each taking four wickets.
Sri Lanka’s hitters struggled with the bat throughout the Test, scoring only 174 and 178 runs respectively. The Islanders were defeated by a large margin because no batter showed any tenacity with the bat.
Jadeja was the show-stopper, scoring 175 runs in the first innings and taking nine wickets in the match.
The day-night Test between India and Sri Lanka will begin on March 12 in Bengaluru.
