IND vs SL: Chetan Sharma, Chairman of the All India Senior-Selection Committee, said that batters Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara had been informed in advance that they would be dropped for two Test matches against Sri Lanka.

Rohit Sharma was appointed as the new Test captain of the Indian men’s team while stalwarts Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been dropped from the Sri Lanka series.

“The selection committee deliberated a lot on Rahane and Pujara. We told them we will not consider them against Sri Lanka but doors are open for them. We have told them to go and play Ranji Trophy,” said Chetan Sharma during a virtual press conference.

“They have served the country for so long. They can come back, why not? It’s like a graph…Rahane hit a hundred yesterday against Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy. This is a process of managing…Who wouldn’t be happy if they come back?” he added.

Chetan Sharma, Chairman, All India Senior-Selection Committee, said Washington Sundar and KL Rahul ruled out of the Sri Lanka T20 and Test series unless they recover early. Ravichandran Ashwin subject to pass a fitness test. Chetan Sharma said Axar Patel is still recovering in rehab and may be ready for the second Test match.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a new schedule for India’s upcoming home series against Sri Lanka earlier this week. The tour intended to begin with a two-match Test series, but it will instead begin with T20Is, with the first encounter taking place on February 24 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. On February 26 and 27, the second and third T20Is will be held at Dharamsala.

Following the T20I series, the teams will play two Tests as part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle 2021-23. The first Test will held in Mohali from March 4 to 8. Followed by the second Test in Bengaluru from March 12 to 16. Former captain Virat Kohli will play his 100th Test match in the first Test. While the second Test will be a day/night affair.
