IND vs SL 1st Test: Jadeja, Ashwin put hosts in command at Stumps on Day 2
IND vs SL 1st Test: Ravindra Jadeja struck an unbroken 175 on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka, as India declared their first innings at 574/8 before scalping three opponents’ wickets at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Saturday.
Sri Lanka’s score at stumps on Day 2 was 108/4, and they were 466 runs behind India. Pathum Nissanka (26*) and Charith Asalanka (1*) are remaining at the crease for Sri Lanka, while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja each took one wicket for the hosts.
Ravichandran Ashwin was the standout of the hosts’ bowlers, taking two wickets. When Sri Lanka batted in the third session, they got off to a strong start, frustrating Indian bowlers. But it was experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who drew the first blood for India in the 19th over, when he trapped Lahiru Thirimanne in front of wickets for LBW.
Jadeja was introduced to bowl for the first time in the 25th over. And he dismissed the other Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne with only his second ball.
Bumrah, who knocked out Pathum Nissanka in the 32nd over, rewarded in his following over when he trapped Angelo Mathews in front of wickets.
Soon after, Ashwin struck again, increasing the strain on the visitors. Dhananjaya de Silva was caught for LBW by the seasoned Indian bowler.
Earlier in the day, India lost its eighth wicket early in the second session. As Vishwa Fernando sent Jayant Yadav (2) back to the pavilion.
Ravindra Jadeja, on the other hand, continued to score runs at a rapid pace. In the 123rd over of the innings, the left-handed batter reached 150 runs.
Rohit Sharma declared the innings with the score at 574/8 after Jadeja made an unbeaten 175 runs. In the first innings, Sri Lanka forced to bowl 129.2 overs.
