Duleep Trophy: West & North Zones advance to semifinals on basis of first-innings lead
West Zone and North Zone secured semi-final berths in the Duleep Trophy by taking the first-innings lead in their matches against North East Zone and East Zone respectively.
While West at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium had a commanding 367-run advantage over North East Zone and decided to bat in the fourth and final day on Sunday, North East Zone overcame their total thanks to a brilliant ton by debutant Yash Dhull (193).
At the conclusion of the game, the Ajinkya Rahane-led West Zone were 268 for five. As the game dragged on to a tie, Shams Mulani was out for 97 (115 balls, 12 fours), and Aith Sheth was still unbeaten on 102 (101 balls, 10 fours, 1 six).
Before Mulani and Sheth joined forces for a 179-run stand, North East bowlers had their opponent three down for 49 and 65 for 4 in the second innings.

In order to contain the West hitters, medium-pacer Dippu Sangma (3 for 70) dismissed Het Patel (age 7), Rahul Tripathi (age 24), and Hardik Tamore (age 24).
In Puducherry, North added another 112 runs after resuming on 433 for three from the previous night before being removed for 545. Mandeep Singh, the skipper, scored a cautious 63 while Himanshu Rana made 81.
The diligent left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed came up with a five-wicket haul to contain Mandeep Singh & Co. just as North Zone appeared to be on track for a massive total.
Among the victims of Shahbaz Ahmed were Mandeep, Himanshu Rana, and Nishant Sindhu. He broke the 131-run stand between Mandeep and Himanshu Rana, which significantly aided East in halting North’s onslaught.
