AUS vs SL: Jhye Richardson, Inglis and Maxwell star as hosts win fourth T20I, gain 4-0 series lead
AUS vs SL: Australia beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the fourth T20I of the five-match series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, thanks to Jhye Richardson‘s two-wicket haul and Josh Inglis‘ 40-run innings.
With this victory, Australia has taken a 4-0 lead in the five-match series, with the last T20I set for Sunday. Australia’s chase for 140 runs got off to a shaky start as opening batter Ben McDermott (9) was dismissed in the fifth over by Maheesh Theekshana. In the ninth over, Lahiru Kumara dismissed Australia captain Aaron Finch (2) and Ashton Agar (26), reducing the hosts to 49/3.
The partnership of Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell at the crease then resurrected Australia’s innings. Australia’s score was 86/3 after 12 overs, with the hosts still needing 54 runs to win. After Inglis’ 40-run knock, Maxwell (48*) and Marcus Stoinis (8*) ensured the hosts crossed the finish line with 11 balls to spare.
Sri Lanka had earlier produced 139/8 in the allocated twenty overs, thanks to 46 and 22 runs from Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka, respectively. Kane Richardson and Jhye Richardson each took two wickets for Australia.
Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka also contributed. With useful cameos of 27 and 17 runs, respectively, as Sri Lanka reached a total of more than 130 runs. Sri Lanka lost six wickets in the final five overs and only contributed 35 runs to their total.
