Asia Cup 2022: Afghanistan’s Fareed Ahmad made a threatening gesture after running up to Pakistan’s Asif Ali, who in response raised his bat as the two players almost came to blows in what turned into an ill-tempered cricket match in the Asia Cup here on Wednesday.

After being dismissed in a tight climax, Asif lost his composure and violently brandished his bat at Fareed.

With four balls left in their difficult 130-run chase, Pakistan triumphed by one wicket with Naseem Shah’s two sixes to set up a final against Sri Lanka.

When quick bowler Fareed took two wickets in the 19th over, including the crucial fall of big-hitting Asif, tempers boiled.

The batsman, who smacked two sixes in a quick 16 off eight balls, caught at short fine-leg. While attempting to hook a bouncer, and as he was leaving the field, he got into an argument with Fareed.

Before the players and the umpire intervened to diffuse the situation, an irate Asif pointed his bat in the direction of Fareed.

Shadab Khan, the vice-captain of Pakistan and the team’s leading scorer with 36 runs. He downplayed the incident by claiming it occurred “in the heat of the moment” and best left on the field.

Mohammad Nabi, the Afghanistan captain, was fielding in the deep. And stated he had no idea what had happened in the middle.

There was a lot of fan violence as well. With some films showing Afghan fans beating Pakistan fans with stadium seats. Videos also show Afghan supporters angrily throwing plastic seats at Pakistan supporters who were hiding.

With their victory, Pakistan eliminated both Afghanistan and its competitor India.

Afghanistan and India meet in a dead rubber in Dubai on Thursday.
