Mosaddek Hossain played well, but the team needed more contributions, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan remarked following his team’s seven-wicket loss to Afghanistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022.

Afghanistan was able to earn straight qualifying to the Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 because to a late blitz from left-hander Najibullah Zadran. In a Group B match on Tuesday, Najibullah blasted a string of sixes to help his country upset Bangladesh by seven wickets.

“It is always tough when you lose 4 wickets in the first 7-8 overs. We were in the game for the first 14-15 overs–credit to Afghanistan. In a T20 game, whoever is standing up for the team should it take it till the end. Mosaddek played well but we needed more contributions, We knew Najibullah is a dangerous batsman. We thought we had the game when they needed 60-odd in the last 6 overs. But credit to Najibullah,” said Shakib in a post-match presentation.

Coming to the match, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first.

Despite a valiant effort from Mosaddek Hossain (48*), Afghanistan was able to hold Bangladesh to a score of 127/7 thanks to the outstanding bowling of pacer Mujeeb ur Rahman and spinner Rashid Khan.

Afghan bowlers did an excellent job of limiting Bangladesh to 53/5. Mosaddek Hossain’s (48*) and Mahmudullah’s (25) valiant strikes enabled Bangladesh to score respectably. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/16) and Rashid Khan (3/22) presented challenges for Bangladesh.

Afghanistan struggled to get going when trying to chase 128 and was at 65/3 with six overs left. Then, with nine balls remaining, Ibrahim Zadran (42*) and Najibullah Zadran (43*) let free and chased the target.

Bangladesh’s top bowler was Mosaddek Hossain (1/12). Saifuddin and Shakib each claimed one wicket.

Mujeeb ur Rahman was named “Man of the Match” in recognition of his game-winning performance.

On Wednesday, India will play Hong Kong in their second Asia Cup game.
