Asia Cup 2022: India out of contention for final even before last match against Afghanistan
Asia Cup 2022: India was eliminated from contention for the Asia Cup tournament on Wednesday after Pakistan defeated Afghanistan by one wicket in a nail-biting “Super 4” match in Sharjah.
Rohit Sharma-led India and Afghanistan have lost both of their games and are out of the competition, making the match between the two teams on Thursday pointless.
Pakistan and Sri Lanka secured their positions in the top match to be contested on Sunday with four points each from two victories each.
India seemed lost in the Super 4 stage after easily defeated Pakistan and Hong Kong in their group matches. They lost to Pakistan by five wickets before losing to Sri Lanka in a close game by six wickets.
If Afghanistan had defeated Pakistan on Wednesday. India would have had a mathematical chance to get to the final on Sunday. In addition, Sri Lanka needed to defeat Pakistan on Friday in order to help India. They needed to defeat Afghanistan by a wide margin on Thursday.
After losing to Sri Lanka, India’s fate was no longer in their hands. Any glimmer of optimism they may have had dashed. When Pakistan defeated Afghanistan in the final over of a Super 4 game that might have gone either way.
