Arrest warrant issued for Nepal cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane over alleged rape

A Nepali court issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for the captain of the national cricket team Sandeep Lamichhane, police said, after a 17-year-old girl accused him of rape.

Sandeep Lamichhane, 22, has served as the face of cricket’s growth in Nepal’s hilly region. Although ODI status granted to Nepal in 2018, the country is still a long way from hosting a World Cup.

The leg spinner’s big break came in 2018 when the Delhi Capitals signed him for the lucrative Indian Premier League. Since then, he has become the most sought-after Nepali cricket player in international T20 tournaments.

A complaint made against the cricketer earlier this week by a 17-year-old girl. And her legal representative, who claimed that he had sexually assaulted her in a hotel room in Kathmandu last month after they had met and gone out.

Lamichhane is presently competing with the Jamaica Tallawahs in the West Indies-based Caribbean Premier League. His most recent Instagram photo, which made three days ago, included a St. Lucia hotel as a tag.

“The district court has issued an arrest warrant against Sandeep Lamichhane for further investigation,” Dinesh Mainali, a spokesman for Kathmandu district police, told AFP.

Police said on Wednesday that if he was not in Nepal, they might turn to foreign law enforcement or Interpol for help.

Lamichhane chosen as the national team of Nepal’s captain last season.
